"God has a plan for my life." "God gives you the talent. He has given me everybody a special talent. I have special talents to play baseball. I know where they came from and I know why I have them. It's my duty to develope them, get the most out of them." "Gut you can sit there and waste that talent." "Mentally, I think I prepare for a game with prayer adn the anticipation of wanting to glorify God with the talent he has given me." "There are some days I realize I didn't give as much as I should have. My prayer then is a prayer for forgiveness and saying, 'Hey, I could have done a lot more.' Early in the season I struggled. I wasn't frustrated, but I thing God got my attention and said, 'Cast it all on my and go out there and use the talents I gave you.'" "Getting closer to him [God] really helped me get my life on the field where it needed to be and the level I needed to be playing at." "I'm praying a lot, man, living by faith. I'm not praying for homeruns or praying for hits, just praying to go out and compete hard."
"My faith grows stronger every year, too. I think that's the biggest key for me, my prayer life and being consistent on the field every day. I don't pray for the homeruns. I pray to play hard everyday and give it the best shot I've got."
"I haven't been here but a year. The fan support here is unbelievable. It's something I'll never forget, but I just don't feel I'm worthy enough of a curtain call."
"That's kind of tough to swallow because I've played center field my whole life. I guess Tony sees me as a utility outfielder, but I'll accept that role in right field. I don't mind it one bit."
"There's a definite routine that you've got to get set, and you've got to learn. I'm still feeling my way around. I've got a better idea this year than last year."
"I'm still young on this squad. If you include Rick Ankiel, myself, and Eli Marrero, everybody else had five years plus experience. I'm just still kind of taking it all in."
"I know I have a lot more to learn in this game." "There's so much to learn about this game. Everything's constantly changing. New faces. New pitchers."
"Probably there's a lot more expected than there was the first two years. It's my turn to contribute a little instead of riding everybody's coat-tails."
"I was disappointed, but I learned a lot after 1999. I can't come out every day and take 200 swings in the cage and then try to hit, batting practice, on the field. You try to do that over 162 games and by August, you're just wiped out."
"In that sense, failure was good. In my faith and belief, you're going to have your trials and your troubles, but what you do with them is what makes you the player and the person that you are. I know this year exactly where I stand and how to go about things."
"It's tough. But you take your slumps. It's just a matter of how you bounce back." "I'm working on my attitude every day. My concentration, my effort, and playing the game that way."
"There's a lot of downtime at the ball park, in between getting treatment, going in to get stretched, and I want to fill it up with something constructive."
"I wasn't really a big reader before. I wish I would have been, but I've got a lot of free time now. In between batting practice and the games, I'll go in and read a chapter or I'll read some on the road, on flights."
"People are going to judge you by what they read in the media and different things. They don't really get to know the person."
"I have mom, dad, a couple of grandmothers (at the game). It's always good to do something while they're here."
"That's not a bad thing (hitting homeruns)." "That's not a bad thing. I'm seeing the ball great and having good at bats. This is definitely a lift for me. It was just a matter of getting some pitches out over the plate."
"I was trying to hit the ball hard up the middle, and he got the ball out over the plate. I put a good swing on it. You saw what happened."
"He's got good stuff. You just really have to take advantage of the pitches he gives you to hit. Luckily, I got a ball up and out over the plate." "It's a long way out there. I did get a good swing on a nice pitch. Luckily, it gets out."
"Any little thing to spark an offense, I'm willing to do. If it takes me laying down a bunt to get on first, more power to the those guys behing me because they're really swinging the bat well." "My legs felt good today. Some days they feel like garbage. My right knee has been kind of aching." "I can come out and go a week straight feeling really good. And sometimes I can't seem to get it warm, but hopefully I'm on teh path where I need to be-with no injuries." "I've always been comfortable against lefties. It's important to get some at bats against them so you can get a rhythm going. I think I've got that now."
"The at bats I'm having strikeouts on, it seems like I get some bad pitches called against me. It's tough to make adjustments at the plate when you don't know what's going to be a ball and what's going to be a strike."
"You have to win a game like that any way you can. You always like to be the guy who gets the winning hit, but it was our bullpen that did the job last night. Everybody came through."
"It's one of those balls I've got to have. I heard Jimmy (Edmunds) say, 'Back.' If it wasn't for him saying, 'back', I wouldn't have even got a glove on it. By no means is it an excuse but I might end up taking one in the teeth one day. I was running kind of blind and kind of sticking your glove out where you last saw it. I felt awful about that play. We should have been out of the inning. Bud was pitching such a good game. I told him when I got in the dugout, 'I'll try to get it back for you.'" "You never know about the elements. I know we didn't want to play two games today."
"A 10 game streak isn't going to win tomorrow's game." "I remember thinking, 'I hope all the pitchers aren't like this, or I'm in trouble." "I said, 'these guys are in trouble if he's got that much juice left." "I think I might complete some votes for him."
"Matt (Morris) throws the ball so great. Today was probably the best day I've seen him since he's had his arm back after that surgery. And that's a confidence builder for us to see." "Scoring runs early is huge for any pitcher. It lets him go out and do what he wants to do, not feel like he's pressed to not make any mistakes." "You get Matt Morris out there on the mound and see him give up a run early, it's pretty much a surprise." "Good pitching hurts good hitting. You'd be surprised how many times the problems we're having are because of good pitching. But sometimes you can get good clutch hitting if you take a good approach at the plate. We're having our ups and downs."
"It's a matter of gelling and having the guys feel comfortable. The guys in the bullpen are starting to understand their role, and the hitters understand there Role. We're playing defense as well as offense and things are working out." "Naw, I don't mind Will (Clark) at all. We got along really well. And I learned. He's a great player who brought a lot of fire to this team. I've just tried to take something from everybody, and Will's competitive attitude toward the game is definitely something that everybody can learn from." But weve got Big Mac and (Jim) Edmunds. Its important to drive in some runs but Id like to score a bunch of runs, being on base ahead of some of those guys. "I'll do what I can and try to get better as quickly as I can. There's still a lot of the season left. Hopefully, I'll get in there soon and pick it up right back."
"I can't picture myself being here for three years already." "I know I wasn't expected to do as much then as I am now when I step out on that field. It's like when I step in the batter's box, there's a different expectation now from all our players in the dugout then in my first two years. Now, it's 'Jd is going to come up with a big hit,' where it used to be 'Maybe he can come up with a big hit.' They don't expect me to let them down." "If you look at us adn think we're perfect, you're going to find out every time that we're sinners and we're not perfect. You're going to see me stumble. I don't show it on the field, but I get frustrated and I take out [those frustrations]. I go in the tunnel and just really try to get a grasp of things. When you're hitting .300, you're failing seven times out of every 10, and a lot of times an out could be a two-run single." "We ought to have some kind of share of the division. It just can't come down to head-to-head. We went to the last game of the season a game up and we just happened to lose." "Where God got my attention was I had a really good first half of spring training, then all of a sudden I couldn't find anything and it carried over to the season." "The big key can be going oh-for-three but going up there for that fourth at-bat and still having those three things [Attitude,Concentration,Effort]. That will save you for a hit instead of giving up because of frustration. that's the difference between this year and last year. I'm not giving up." "I can remember in college thinking, 'You know, I'm going to hit a home run in this at-bat.' I just seemed to be able to get a pitch and see it well and hit it good." "When they [family] came in town for that [White Sox] series, I thought how neat it would be to hit a home run for them." "It's hard for me to explain why I've already hit 21 home runs where I only hit 18 all last year. It's a matter of getting older, getting to know the pitchers better, preperation. But more than anything, it's a blessing, enjoying the game and enjoying my teammates. It's just fun to come up to the ballpark." "I've learned a lot the last three years, and I'm sure I'll learn a lot more the next six or seven." "I set my expectations high for myself, higher than other people ever could. I'm not competing against other players, only against what I'm able to do. I just want to fit into the lineup, be aggressive on the bases and at bat and defensively, and then we'll see what the score is after nine innings."
"It's important to be comfortable with your surroundings, and me and Jimmy [Edmonds] work really well together. We understand where each other's at, and I think that's a big key. I know what balls he's gonna get to and (he knows) what balls I can get to. It's a good feeling when you go into a game and know that you don't have to worry about a collision or getting to a certain ball. We work hand-in-hand, cut up, play around, enjoy the game and enjoy working together. It's been a lot of fun."
